Our intent is to provide an English curriculum that enables our children to become confident, capable communicators, readers and writers. We recognise English is at the core of all learning and that a strong foundation will support children throughout their lives. At Milford-on-sea Primary school, spoken language takes centre stage within our language rich environment.
Our curriculum aims to engage and motivate our pupils in their learning whilst offering flexibility to adapt to the needs of all. We centre children’s learning around high quality, diverse texts and real-life experiences. We make links to our global and We Care values which develops belonging, empathy and an awareness of the wider world.
During their time at MOSPS, we will enable children to develop effective communication skills, a love of reading and to see themselves as writers who can express their ideas effectively and creatively.
Reading at MOSPS Our priority is to encourage our children to become confident readers with a love of books and an understanding of the joy and purpose of reading. In class, we use high quality texts to drive our reading and writing curriculum and provide a range of different text types including different genres, cultures & traditions.
All children will experience a combination of being read to, reading aloud and reading independently.
Our pupils have the opportunity to communicate ideas and information to a reader from Foundation Stage onwards.
We aim for the writing opportunities we provide to be meaningful to the children and enjoyable so we base our writing around quality texts, real life experiences (including ‘hooks’) and current topics in class and in the world around them.
Spoken language underpins the development of reading and writing as well as being crucial to children’s cognitive, linguistic and social development. We encourage children to be inquisitive and share their thoughts or questions confidently.
Children are surrounded by a high quality of language through our choice of texts, collecting & exploring new words & providing topic & tier 2 word lists.

Your child will begin their journey into learning to read using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised Phonics scheme in Reception, continuing into Year 1. Visit the EYFS Phase page for further information.
Our library and experienced librarian at the centre of our school provide children with access to books at a suitable level and all teachers know the importance of promoting books to help motivate our pupils to read.
